Kio, Galaxia, Infinity and Rachel

First of all, congratulations on recently getting married!
Thanks for taking the time to chat to us Rachel.  Sintonizart has a really big presence in the event production world here in Barcelona and so we are excited to find out more.

Tell us where you’re both from.
I was born in a small town in California and at the age of two moved to Minnesota, where I spent my formative years growing up in the Midwestern metropolis of Minneapolis.  Averse to winter, I always knew I would move away from Minneapolis. After travelling the world and studying in Mexico, France and China, I came to live in Barcelona in the year 2000 and have been here ever since.

Kio was born in the neighborhood of Gracía in Barcelona.  He has lived in many neighborhoods around the city and in neighboring towns. He lived in the Ukraine where he studied speech and opera.  He also lived in Ibiza for many years.

So, when was Sintonizart created and how did you begin building your contacts.  In the event world especially, we know how important contacts are.
In 1996 Kio started a performance company called Decoliflor.  They were the first performers in Spain to incorporate illumination into costumes and they performed mostly in nightclubs and town festivals.  As the company matured, so did the clientele. By 2005 the company was working more and more corporate events and in 2008 Sintonizart was born. Being a local, Kio has contacts that go back to his childhood. Having providers who’s trust is based on a lengthy relationship is no doubt a huge advantage.  Kio and I met in 2005 at an event where I was performing with a group of artists and he was directing a group of artists.

When I came to Barcelona in 2000 I began my career by dancing with a hula hoop on Las Ramblas.  It was incredibly satisfying to make money purely by pleasing people with my dance. Street performing in Barcelona at that time was a celebrated experience and there was little to no regulation.  It was also one of the best schools I have ever attended, having the continual feedback from a live audience, exchanging tricks and tips with all kinds of performers and learning how to captivate people’s attention while maintaining a sustainable energy level are all things that I figured out through my experiences performing on the streets of Barcelona. Because I put myself out there, I made contacts that lead me on to bigger events and eventually to join forces with Kio.

You guys are both full of personality and your productions are quite a show! By any chance, do you have a performance background lol? If so/not tell us more about you.
Kio is innately musical.  He can tune a guitar by ear and has great rhythm, pitch and timing.  He taught himself how to play guitar at the age of 12 and has played in a number of bands ranging from punk rock to funky electro.  At the moment he is playing in a new band with an old friend. I will let you know when they have their next concert!

And like all true superheroes, Kio has is alter-ego.  Kio created the Disco Ball Man for MTV when they came to Ibiza in 2000.  The Disco Ball man has performed all around the world. A month after we first met he called me up to go on tour dancing with him in light costumes and running the laser for the Disco Ball in Russia.  It was just the two of us for 3 weeks touring Siberia in the winter!

I have always had a passion for performance and when I came to Barcelona my passion found many outlets in this creative city. Dancing, stilt walking and MCing are some of performances I have contributed to our productions over the years.

Tell us about some of Sintonizart’s accomplishments throughout the years.
Sintonizart is the most awarded artistic production company in Spain and Portugal  In 2010 we won our first gold award for best show and entertainment at an event with our cutting edge show “Technologique.”  In 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 we also received awards for excellence in artistic and technical productions in events.

It’s great to receive these awards and be recognized officially for all our hard work.  However, perhaps one of our greatest accomplishments is the team we have built and the work environment we have created.   This structure allows us to work swiftly and effectively while enjoying the process. As our name indicates, we aspire to create “Sintonia,”  This is a word that does not easily translate into English but means something like “fine tuning” No matter what our part may be in an event, we pay attention to the overall “sintonia” of the event to ensure that all elements fit and flow together.

How has having a family tweak the way that you run the business? Has it changed the business concept in any way?
Now that we are parents we have both learned to delegate tasks so that we can spend more time with our children.   For the first time ever we truly disconnected over the summer for nearly two months and were able to focus on finally getting married and going to the Burning Man Festival (aka Mecca for people like us) in Black Rock City Nevada with the whole family.  When we returned to Spain it was wonderful to see how our team had kept everything on track in our absence.

Finally, what’s coming up next for you in 2019?
It’s always hard to know what’s coming up and I don´t want to jinx it by saying anything before it´s happened…. But we are hoping to be managing the production of bigger, full length shows for all audiences.  This would mean that we could invite our friends to come see us in action. I will keep you posted!

Thank you so much and we look forward to seeing the growth.
